Barrow drunk attacked police officer and partner

A YOUNG man assaulted his girlfriend and a police officer after he drank four bottles of wine and more than 10 shots.

Paul James George Charnley, 21, had been to an 18th birthday party on October 13 with Zoe Mattison, who he had been in a relationship with for three months.

Mr John Appleby, prosecuting, told Furness Magistrates’ Court the situation was “amicable” until Miss Mattison spoke to her uncle and went outside the party at the Engineers’ Club, in Abbey Road, for a taxi.

But a drunken Charnley then started to shout and accuse her of infidelity, repeatedly calling her a slag, said Mr Appleby.

The couple walked together to his home, in Howe Street, Barrow, but on three occasions Charnley pushed his girlfriend in the chest, causing her to fall backwards to the ground.

Miss Mattison suffered grazing and bleeding to her elbow, grazing to her ankle and her camera was damaged.

Once inside the house, Mr Appleby said Charnley continued to verbally abuse Miss Mattison and smash some items.

The police were called, but when they arrived Charnley told officers “get out of my room, I don’t talk to pigs”.

He resisted arrest by kicking and lashing out, making contact with PC Robert Beck.

Mr Appleby said Charnley wriggled free and punched PC Beck under the eye, before being pepper sprayed.

Under police interview, Charnley said he drank four bottles of wine, 10 Jagerbombs and a few shots of vodka.

Miss Maureen Fawcett, defending, told the court on Tuesday that Charnley was remorseful.

She said: “He recognises himself that from an early age he’s got into trouble with the police due to alcohol.

“It’s the first time he has drunk for over 12 months and, unfortunately, he has drunk to excess.

“He has misread the situation with his girlfriend. It’s really the antics of a very drunk young man.”

Charnley admitted assault and assaulting an officer in the execution of his duty.

He was given a community order with a requirement for 12 months’ supervision. He must carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and attend alcohol awareness sessions and was ordered to pay compensation of £100 to Miss Mattison and £50 to PC Beck, plus £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
