A CUMBRIAN detective has appeared before a crown court judge charged with rape and indecent assault.
Nicholas Doherty, of Walney, was charged by Warwickshire Police in March.
Doherty, 41, who was suspended from duty by Cumbria police in November, appeared in Warwick Crown Court in Leamington Spa yesterday.
He was not asked to enter pleas to any of the charges and was re-bailed until a plea and case management hearing in August.
In a statement issued earlier this year, Warwickshire police said Doherty had been charged with a rape that is alleged to have taken place in Stratford-upon-Avon in February 2012. He is also accused of an indecent assault said to have taken place in Cumbria in December 1999.
The Barrow police detective was arrested at his home on November 27, 2013 by Warwickshire Police.
The force said that following questioning on arrest, Doherty was released on conditional police bail with strict conditions pending further enquiries by the force.
Cumbria police confirmed Doherty was suspended from duty when he was arrested in November and that he remains suspended.
Doherty is due to appear in Warwick Crown Court next month.
