Barrow demolition site attracts attention from firm

A NEW developer is keen to build homes on a Barrow site which has become an “eyesore” since streets were demolished as part of a big regeneration project.

The area was cleared following the demolition of terraced houses in Arthur Street, Sutherland Street and Marsh Street, as part of the North Central Renewal Area programme.

The Barrow Borough Council scheme to acquire and demolish the homes was carried out to revamp the rundown neighbourhood and lift demand. It included a compulsory purchase order, approved by government, to buy homes from residents.

The final phase of demolition took place in late 2011, but the council has struggled to find a developer. Councillors previously agreed to grant Bridgehouse Property Consultants an exclusivity period to devise a development in partnership with Leck Construction, but the companies later decided it was not viable and pulled out.

But the executive committee was told on Wednesday a new approach has been made by Copperplane Ltd, which has owned around 50 privately rented properties in Barrow for around 10 years.

It has also carried out a number of small development projects outside the area. Executive director Phil Huck told the Barrow Town Hall meeting interest in the site had been very limited and it made sense to give Copperplane a three-month period of exclusivity to work up project designs.

He added: “Given previous decisions by developers, I’ve said the council priority is to get developers on the site rather than get receipts up front. Notwithstanding that, the scheme still hasn’t progressed. It’s a challenging site and the more we can do to get developers on, the better.”

Councillors agreed it was important to get things moving. Councillor Ann Thomson said: “The sooner we get this done, the better. It’s an eyesore and it’s becoming a mess now. Many residents are mentioning it to me on a regular basis because kids are congregating.”

Councillor Kevin Hamilton said: “Every time we do a Fife Street Neighbourhood Watch, it’s mentioned by residents. It’s becoming more of a tipping ground for fly tippers. The sooner we can get it moving, the better.”

lets hope they build good houses that attract people to buy them, and not just cram them in to make as much profit they can over quality
