Barrow club’s survival bid is lifted by tournament

A NEW football centre stepped into the breach in a bid to help raise cash for a community sports hub under threat of closure.

Pulse Soccer Centre offered its facilities up free of charge for an under-11 football tournament on Sunday which helped raise funds for Hawcoat Park Sport and Social Club – which is under threat of closure unless it can find the £65,000 per year needed to keep its doors open.

On Sunday the junior football section of the club organised a futsal competition for under-11s which raised around £250 towards the club’s funds.

Colin Garnett, who helped organise the event, said: “Hawcoat Park is unique in the fact that it supports so many sports.

“We’ve got five and six year olds playing football right up to people in their 80s playing bowls.”

Competing teams took on fun festive-themed names and the competition was won by Walney Wisemen who narrowly beat Holly Celtic 2 – 1 in the final.

Daryl James, manager at Pulse Soccer, said: “One of our other managers had a chat with Hawcoat Park about it and we agreed to do it.

“We’ve been open for just over two months now and on average we’re getting 60 bookings a week – the aim is 100 in the next few months.”
