Barrow business to create more than 25 jobs

A NEW town centre diner and bar is to create more than 25 jobs.

A NEW Barrow diner and bar is to create more than 25 jobs.

The American-themed business is the latest venture for well-known Barrow entrepreneur Rick Lucas. The Hollywood Rock Cafe is to open inside the former Paulo Gianni’s restaurant and bar in Cavendish Street. Mr Lucas’ application to supply alcohol, late night refreshment and provide entertainment will be discussed during a meeting of Barrow Borough Council’s licensing committee on Wednesday.

Mr Lucas already operates the Manhattans and Broadway night clubs in the same complex. He hopes to have the new business open before Christmas and employ around 26 members of staff. That would take the number of people he employs across the three venues to around 74 people.

Mr Lucas said the focus would be on creating an authentic American experience with a US-inspired menu, decor and even TVs showing American sports and news.

Mr Lucas, who has been behind numerous Barrow nightclub ventures, including the floating Princess Selandia, said: “It will be very similar to the old Chicago Junction in what is now Salvana’s. People can think of Barrow as a hamlet, but there’s quite a lot of city folk who come to this town and expect city things – and there aren’t any.

“As long as it doesn’t upset anybody, then we will try most things. People have been quite positive; the police have been positive, the licensing committee have been positive, as well as the environmental health and building control.”

Mike Fallon, chairman of the Barrow Licensed Victuallers’ Association, said: “We welcome it opening. At the moment, this is the busiest part of town and it’s very busy. We’ve got more people trying to come in than we can handle on Saturdays, so this will ease the load for the street and make it more comfortable.

“It’s a great thing what’s happening to this part of town. It’s nice to see the popular places in Cavendish Street doing well. We’re all Barrow people who are proud to be in the town and keep our premises in good condition.”
