A STAKEOUT at a training ground led to a budding Barrow footballer meeting some of his favourite footballing heroes.
Holbeck boy, Jamie Cassidy, was taken to Liverpool FC’s Melwood as a special treat to mark the end of the summer holidays.
The nine-year-old, who plays for Hawcoat Park Catalans under-10s, is a huge LFC fan and has been a club member since he was four.Jamie’s mum, Sharon, took him to Melwood last Tuesday afternoon and again on Wednesday morning, in a bid to meet as many players as possible.
The 43-year-old, of Chestnut Walk, Barrow, said: “They were all lovely.
“The bigger ones, like Gerrard and Carragher, the ones you really want, they smile, they wave, but they don’t really stop. But the ones that did stop were brilliant.”
Among those who posed for photos were some of the team’s summer signings, including Team GB Olympic footballer Joe Allen and Italian striker Fabio Borini.
Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and third keeper Brad Jones, who found fame during this year’s FA cup semi-final, also stopped to sign Jamie’s shirt and ball.
The reds’ new star signing, Raheem Sterling, really impressed the Barrow youngster.
Miss Cassidy said: “He was the big one for Jamie, he just thought it was brilliant. I thought he was fantastic as well.
“He must have signed around 30 autographs. He had his photo taken with all of the kids – he could not have been nicer.”
But for Miss Cassidy, the highlight of the day was meeting a more seasoned Liverpool star.
She could not believe her luck when Liverpool number one and Anfield favourite, Pepe Reina, who she described as “absolutely gorgeous”, pulled over to say hello.
She said: “Because he’s been in the team for such a long time, it was a bit of a scoop really to get his signature.
“Apparently he doesn’t stop very often, so we were very lucky to get him.
“He was lovely – and very nice to look at as well!”
