Barrow AFC’s oldest fan dies months after hitting 100

BARROW AFC’s oldest fan has died, just a few months after celebrating a landmark birthday.

Ken Harper died on Tuesday aged 100.

The former shipyard engineering inspector, who lived at Sandside Lane in Kirkby, first watched his favourite team when he was aged 16 and over the following eight and-a-half decades he followed the team religiously.

To mark his centenary, the Barrow super-fan was presented with a special Barrow AFC shirt by club chairman Brian Keen and he was even granted his own parking space at the Furness Building Society Stadium, in Holker Street.

The avid Barrow AFC fan started riding motorbikes at the age of 16, but got his first car in 1934 after a few lessons with a friend.

Until recently Mr Harper still took to the road in his trusty 2001 Renault Clio – despite reaching the age of 100 on Monday, December 10.
