Ban for drink driver who stopped police in Barrow

A TEENAGE drink driver was caught half an hour after flagging down a police car in Barrow and asking for taxi numbers.

Kieran Andrew Braithwaite, of Marsh Garth, Kirkby, pleaded guilty to drink driving in Furness Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard how the 19-year-old was in Abbey Road, Barrow, at 4.55am on June 28 when he pulled out in front of a police car in his Honda Civic.

Braithwaite had been on a night out in Barrow and had slept at a friend’s house before attempting to drive the 10 miles back to his home in Kirkby.

Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said: “The police officer was driving from Barrow when a grey Honda Civic pulled out in front of the vehicle, failing to give way.

“When the officer spoke to Mr Braithwaite, he recognised him from 30 minutes earlier when he had flagged him down asking for taxi numbers.”

Braithwaite smelled of alcohol and when breathalysed he was found to have 61mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35mg.

Representing himself, Braithwaite said: “I want to say I’m sorry.

“I was in Abbey Road because I stopped at a mate’s house.

“We got a taxi back, he went to work and I drove home. I felt fine, I didn’t think I was over the limit. I had slept.”

Braithwaite, an apprentice pipe fitter, was fined £400, ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

He was banned from driving for 17 months.
