BAE Systems apprentices to represent Barrow in London

Two apprentices from BAE Systems Barrow will be battling it out for the title of Britain’ stop shipyard apprentice in the final stages of the Queen's Silver Medal competition this week.

Pipe Fabricator apprentices Shane Clark, 24, from Millom and Keely Walsh, 25, from Barrow have been nominated for the prestigious ‘Worshipful Company of Shipwrights’ award by their training assessors and, as a result, were selected from around 100 apprentices to take part in a week-long course at Kielder Water in Northumbria in September.

During the ‘extreme’ outward bound course, Shane and Keely joined 16 others who had to complete a range of tasks that pushed them to their limits – both physically and mentally – to test their reactions under pressure.

Tasks included hikes, lake swims and building their own rafts and shelters to showcase their leadership and teamwork skills.
