A CONSTRUCTION firm claims it has been left “substantially” out of pocket due to its involvement with a multi-million pound development.

Aspect Construction said it has suspended work on the Ulverston Blue Light Hub following broken promises and mounting financial pressures.

The multi-million pound hub which was masterminded by Cumbria County Council was meant to bring the emergency services in Furness under one roof, the first development of its kind in the area.

But, no work has taken place in at least two weeks with no resolution in sight between contractor and and council.

Terry Hearfield, director of Aspect, told The Mail: “There have been a number of extras on the project, we were supposed to get the ground in a certain condition but when we got here it was in a different condition to what we were told.

“We have had barely any recognition for doing that extra work.

“We have to look after our creditors and our staff. We can’t throw money at it.”

When asked how much Aspect had spent on the development of the hub and the alleged extra work they had to carry out, Mr Hearfield would not give a definite figure. However he said the project had left the company “substantially out of pocket.”

Ground was broken at the site of the hub, on land adjacent to the A590 just outside Ulverston, in February 2017. The £4.6m development when completed will provide emergency service coverage for more than 6,000 people living in Furness and south Cumbria.

Since then The Mail has reported on several occasions the work has been delayed, with the council now faced with this fresh block in the road.

A county council spokesman said: “The amounts being sought from the county council have not been agreed, and we are working hard to resolve the issue. The Ulverston Blue Light Hub project is expected to be completed later than scheduled. A revised schedule and completion date will be confirmed ASAP.”
