FESTIVAL fever took Askam by storm on Saturday with favourite local headliners taking to the stage.

Askambury, named after popular festival Glastonbury, was the first of its kind this year and proved to be a success, with over 450 people attending throughout the day.

The event was held at Askam United FC in Duddon Road from 1pm till 9pm, and raised money for Askam United football club.

Jake Woods, an organiser of the event, said: "It was the first time Askam has ever done anything like this, so we expected around 200 to 300 people at the most.

"People in the community rallied round to help us during the day - it was brilliant to see.

"Some of the organisers have had people approach them in the street to tell them that we did a good job - we would absolutely like to make it an annual event after the feedback we have had."

The festival provided plenty of entertainment for the crowd, with The Chadelics, The Next Stop, Route 66 Legacy, Abbey Road, Threefold, Channel Surfers and Makalu all performing to help raise money for the club.

4 DJs also took to the stage at the weekend alongside the bands, including DJ Steele, Joel Talbot, DJ Curwen and Strike One (aka Grant Hamilton).

Plenty of festivals in the area offer a similar experience during the summer, but Mr Woods says Askambury is different.

Mr Woods said: "Askam is a very tight-knit village, and the way everyone chipped in and got involved really gives Askam a decent name.

"For the next couple of years we would love to do it again and make it bigger and better."

Mr Woods said the community, the football committee and the performers all helped to make the day a success for everyone.

He said: "The festival was not just to raise money for the club, it also for the good of the community and brought a lot of people together.

"We would like to say a big thank you to all the bands and DJs, and our sponsors High Haume Farm Glamping and Finger Prints."
