Ascension Day at Low Furness School
Last updated at 14:11, Friday, 10 June 2011
A SCHOOL celebrated a religious festival by sending scores of brightly-coloured kites heavenwards.
Low Furness School in Urswick marked Ascension Day yesterday.
Around 120 pupils aged from three to 11-years-old helped assemble the plastic kites.
Some parents joined in the day, including morning assembly at the Church of England school, and helped the children with their kites.
Headteacher Sue Little said: “We haven’t done this before, it’s a new venture for us. We like to invite parents and grandparents into the school as often as we can and this was just another opportunity to do it.
She said the theme of the day was “rising up” to reflect Ascension Day, which is held six weeks after Easter and marks Jesus ascending into heaven 40 days after his crucifixion and resurrection.
Ascension Day this year was on June 2 but that fell during the half-term holiday.
Mrs Little added: “ The children were very excited and there was a lovely feeling in the school.”
Parents also helped with a second project to help the children make books containing poems and stories based on myths of the Furness area. That was part of a collaborative programme with Zosia Wand and her Creative Partnerships organisation, which has been working with the school, holding workshops on the theme of Myth Makers of Furness.
