Affordable housing funding plan for South Lakeland

AFFORDABLE homes have been given the go-ahead after South Lakeland District Council approved grants for three new housing schemes.
Funding of £300,000 was approved in principle at a meeting today for homes to be developed in Coniston, Arnside and Kendal.
Developments will include five new homes on land off Collingwood Close, Coniston, as well as 14 homes at Burland Grove, Kendal, and 14 homes at Briery Bank, Arnside.
Affordable house prices will also be frozen, which will make it easier for first-time buyers to purchase a home.
Councillor Jonathan Brook, SLDC portfolio holder for strategic growth, said: “There is a real shortage of affordable homes in South Lakeland and addressing this is one of our key priorities.
“It is right that we offer help to residents to enable them to live in the areas where they have grown up or work, and help to maintain the viability of our local communities.”
The approval follows the second round of bids in 2013 under the New Homes Bonus bidding scheme.
The grants will be funded through a combination of the Second Homes Fund and the New Homes Bonus Reserve.
All three schemes will also be partly funded by the Homes and Communities Agency and the various housing association’s own resources.
All three bids have been considered to be deliverable and planning permission must be secured before construction begins in 2014.
South Lakeland District Counci also agreed to retain existing affordable house prices at £95,000 per two bedroom home and £110,000 per three bedroom home £110,000.
