Addiction service expands

A DRUG and alcohol support service is branching out as it seeks to assist more locals with their recovery from addiction.
New Roots has organised an open day at the Roosegate Community Centre before it begins regular meetings next week.
The support service recently started operating out of the Central and Hindpool Neighbourhood Management offices in Dalton Road, Barrow.
But a need for a place in Roose where people battling drug and alcohol dependency can go for support prompted the service to expand.
Bob Howarth, who is a driving force behind New Roots, said he hoped the open day – to be held from 10am til 4pm on Wednesday – would encourage people to come along to the meetings.
“We’re just a self-help group,” he said. “What we offer is to help people maintain their recovery from alcohol and drug dependency.”
Alex Cresswell, who volunteers his time at New Roots, said the support service was not only for actual addicts, but anyone affected by addiction.
“People don’t always come along because of an individual’s difficulty,” he said. “Family members come along because it helps them to understand the reasons why a loved one is in need and get clarification on how they can help.”
For more information about the meetings call Mr Howarth on 01229 717934 or 07596 728747.
