Valuable information for your holiday plans

BEFORE YOU BOOK
1. If possible, pay for your holiday with a credit card. If you are disappointed with your holiday, or you think it was described incorrectly, paying with a credit card means you may be able to claim against the credit company as well as the tour operator.
2. With package holidays, tour operators are responsible for making sure the whole holiday is as promised – even if part of the package is supplied by another party, such as an airline.
3. When buying a holiday you may be offered travel insurance. It is always a good idea to check out comparison websites such as www.moneysupermarket.com to find the cheapest price for your family.
4. Choose travel agents and tour operators who belong to a recognised trade association, such as the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) or the Association of independent Tour Operators (AITO).
5. GOLDEN RULE: Check out the resort and destination online before you book – websites such as www.holidaytruths.co.uk or www.travelsupermarket.com are a good start. For older or disabled holidaymakers, www.holidaycare.org.uk offers advice on where to go and healthcare provision across the globe.
HOW TO COMPLAIN
1. If you have a problem while you are on a package holiday, you should bring it immediately to the attention of the tour operator's representative at the resort. You may have to ask for a complaint form, or put your complaint in writing in a separate letter.
2. If things are not put right straight away, collect evidence about the problem such as photographs and statements from other holidaymakers. Once you get home, check what your holiday brochure said, or better still take it on holiday with you.
3. When writing a letter of complaint, explain what went wrong and tell them how much compensation you want. Do not give in if you are offered much less than you have asked for. Keep pressing for what you think is fair and reasonable.
4. If your complaint still hasn't been resolved, you can contact the Association of British Travel Agents on 0207 637 2444 or the Association of Independent Tour Operators on 0208 744 9280.
