Abandoned car in Barrow sparks safety fears

ANGRY residents have called for the removal of an abandoned vehicle in Barrow which has prompted health and safety concerns on their street.

They claim the burnt-out Peugeot car at the rear of a property in Devon Street has blighted the area for almost a year.

One neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It’s just asking for rats. The car is an eyesore and there is so much rubbish collecting around it.

“It is partially blocking the alley. Anyone driving past who didn’t know it was there could hit it.

“It’s been there going on for 12 months. I’ve called the council and they say they can’t remove it.”

Alan Barker, street care manager for Barrow Borough Council, said the council was powerless to deal with problem

He said: “It’s on private property, I think there is only about a foot of it that’s on the public highway so legally we can’t do anything about it. Also, when a car is burnt out it becomes the responsibility of the insurance company, so our legislation doesn’t cover it.”

Have your say

Doesn't this council talk some tosh. Powerless, legally etc. etc.
Shift it on H&S grounds, else I suggest the neighbours pull it into the alley and maybe the council just might act.

I bet if it was a foot over double yellows they'd ticket it... it has a reg plate, as is overhanging a public road, get it removed for no tax, I doubt its a project thats being restored.
