A 70-year-old woman is fighting for her life following a serious crash on a major Cumbrian Road.

Police are investigating a two vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on the A6 at Plumpton.

The collision occurred at approximately 12.35pm at the Plumpton Foot junction.

The collision involved a grey VW golf and a white van. The driver of the Golf was a 39-year-old woman from Carlisle she suffered minor injuries. The front-seat passenger of the Golf, a woman aged in her 70s, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the van, a 29-year-old man from Gateshead, was uninjured.

The road remains closed in both directions at this time.
