TWO people have been airlifted to hospital following a serious road traffic collision on the A590.

A 75-year-old man from Yorkshire, who was driving a Peugeot Partner, was treated by Great North Air Ambulance's trauma team for a serious chest injury and airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital.

He arrived at the hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A 68-year-old female passenger in the same vehicle was also airlifted by North West Air Ambulance to a Royal Preston hospital.

A 29-year-old man from Grange, who was driving a Vauxhall Vectra, was uninjured following the collision at Levens.

The A590 has now reopened fully after previously being closed between Newby Bridge and Brettagh Holt.

Long queues of traffic can still be expected as motorists were having to be diverted via the A592 to Windermere after the collision which happened sometime after 10am.

The Great North Air Ambulance were called at 10:45am to the incident with the man in his 70's airlifted to hospital within 20 minutes of their arrival.
