CELEBRATED local artist John Duffin has adapted his scenes of local life into a calendar for 2018.

To mark the launch of the calendar, the Barrow painter and printmaker will hold a signing event on Saturday December 2.

The signings will take place at The Forum in Barrow between 11am and 1pm, and later at Heaths in Dalton Road between 2pm and 3.30pm.

Landmarks depicted in this year's collection include St James's Church in Hindpool, Duke Street on a rainy evening, and the Sir John Barrow Monument at dusk.

John said: "The images are mainly from this year but there are a few earlier pieces included.

"All were chosen for the calendar as they seemed to fit well with the more recent paintings and showed a slightly different style."

The distinctive front cover features five of the area's most recognisable structures, with the theme of landmarks persisting throughout the calendar.

"I wanted to design a striking cover and used the towers of the area to show some of the great landmarks that are within view.

"I love these vertical structures and each one of them has history and memories for me, and I am sure for many other people from Barrow, Dalton, Ulverston and nearby."

Images chosen for each month reflect the seasonal changes as the year progresses.

John added: "I start with about 30 potential images and then whittle it down and start to build a series of pictures that work well together and reflect the different seasons.

"Also there are several images that are part of a larger painting, cropped to fit the calendar size.

"I like this process too, I find a new small painting somewhere in a larger one."

To be in with a chance of winning one of three signed copies of the 2018 calendar answer the question in the form below. The competition is open until 5pm on December 1.
