CUMBRIA Police saw a reduction in violent crime over the Christmas and New Year period.
Between December 14 and January 3, 421 violent crimes were recorded across the county – last year saw 534 for the same period.
The crimes included assault without injury, assault ABH, GBH without intent, wounding with intent to do GBH, and affray.
There were 47 arrests made for drunk and disorderly offences, an increase of seven from last year, but still less than in 2014 for which the figure was 79.
Temporary Chief Superintendent Mark Pannone said: "It is positive to see that less people have committed these crimes over the Christmas period – a time which should be full of celebration and festivity, not assault.
"However, one assault is one too many. These actions ruin lives – for both the person committing the assault and the person assaulted.
"Officers have been working hard across the Christmas and New Year period throughout Cumbria to prevent violence and disorder.
"Where such incidents have occurred we have worked to ensure that offenders are brought to justice."
