A team from the University of Cumbria's student union are encouraging their peers to register to vote in the upcoming General Election.

#GenerationVote is a national campaign by the National Union of Students to make sure young people have a voice.

Bethany Cutter, Theresa Pellegrino and Rowan Cooper-Gritten, the elected full-time officers at University of Cumbria Students’ Union at its campuses across Cumbria, are running the local campaign to encourage as many students as possible to register to vote before the deadline of 11.59pm on Monday.

Bethany, Theresa and Rowan will be out and about talking to students about the issues that matter to them, as well as encouraging them to register to vote on the spot.

Across the UK, only 55 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds are registered to vote, compared to over 90 per cent of over-65s.

Only 43 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds voted in the 2015 General Election.

Theresa said: "Students and young people have the power to swing the vote in constituencies across the UK but must be registered to vote in order to do so."

Students are eligible to register to vote at both their home and term-time addresses, although they will only be able to vote once.
