THE M6 in Cumbria is now fully reopen after a fatal three-vehicle crash.

One man has died and another is seriously injured. The crash happened at around 12.30pm on Sunday February 21 2016.

The M6 was closed in both directions for a while but the northbound carriageway was reopened after two air ambulances left the scene.

The southbound carriageway was closed for almost nine hours after the fatal crash between J38 and J37.

A spokeswoman from Cumbria Police confirmed that one man was pronounced dead. Details on their identity are yet to be released.

The southbound carriageway was closed between junction 38 for Shap and junction 37 for Kendal, while the northbound carriageway was closed between junction 37 and junction 38.

A number of motorists were stuck within the road closure, left stationary for hours before emergency workers could direct them to turn around.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway, but the other carriageway was closed to allow two air ambulances to land.

The Great North Air Ambulance was one of them. The doctor on board anaesthetised a man at the scene, before he was flown to the major trauma unit at James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough.

His condition is serious.
