A man has died following a two-vehicle crash on the M6 motorway.

Two other men were also taken to hospital.

The fatal crash happened yesterday afternoon on the northbound carriageway, between junctions 35 and 36.

The accident involved a car and a van.

The male driver of the car, a Ford Mondeo, has died.

Police said he was the only occupant of the vehicle.

No details of his identity have yet been released, but police said his family have been informed.

The other vehicle involved was a van.

Both the driver and passenger were taken to hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were all at the scene.

The M6 was closed in both directions - between junction 35 at Carnforth and junction 36 at Kirkby Lonsdale - for several hours while detailed investigations were carried out.

Diversions were in place late into the night.

Cumbria Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision. Call 101 with information.

The incident caused miles of tailbacks stretching to junction 34 on the northbound carriageway with lengthy diversions in place for those affected while a collision investigation got underway at the scene.

The northbound carriageway finally re-opened at around 10.30pm.
