A VOLUNTEER with an inshore rescue team has shared a video showing the terrifying speed at which quicksand near Askam can take hold.

Duddon Inshore Rescue team's Danny Blanc shared the video on Facebook after seeing a growing number of youngsters swimming and playing in the area of Askam Pier.

Just this weekend, four boys from Barrow had to be rescued after getting trapped.

The video shows the speed at which quicksand can take hold of a person, with the man's feet quickly getting sucked underneath the surface.

The video also shows how harmless the quicksand looks - as it appears similar to normal sand.

In his post, the inshore rescue team volunteer said: "Please all my friends share this. This is a short clip of sinking sand just of the end of Askam Pier.

"I've seen loads of kids down here swimming and I wouldn't like to think that any of them get stuck, or even worse.

"If anyone gets into trouble don't hesitate to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

"As part of Duddon Inshore Rescue I wouldn't hesitate to do my part as a volunteer."
