THE most anticipated live performance of the weekend - arguably the festival's history - saw Brian Wilson appear at Kendal Calling.

The Beach Boys legend played the Main Stage at Cumbria's biggest music festival today, on what is being billed as his last-ever UK tour.

His keyboard-driven set centred around the classic Pet Sounds album, played in its entirety, prompting mass sing-alongs throughout with a capacity crowd roaring their approval.

He took to the Main Stage ahead of Welsh indie icons Manic Street Preachers, who topped the Saturday bill.

Their energetic and upbeat run-through of the biggest hits, was one of many highlights in this busy day of action, which also included an array of top British acts, such as Editors, Reverend and the Makers, and Feeder.

It was also the day that stood out most for Cumbrian music fans, with a number of the county's best-known acts on the line-up. Alt rockers Graces had an early appearance on the Woodlands stage, with Carlisle natives mylittlebrother and Merigot Boost Sound among the locals on the Carvetti stage - and Ulverston drummer Ben Clyde was joined by his Leeds-based band, Post War Glamour Girls, up on the vast Main Stage.

The Lowther Deer Park site - by now mostly a bog - truly came to life for the visit of the veteran Californian superstar Brian Wilson, with the crowd staying in place to see another world-renowned act, Manic Street Preachers. They covered almost the entirety of their 30-year career with their set, which was rapturously received by the well-versed audience.

The penultimate day of the four-day festival was, on paper, the one that stood out, with its high-profile duo at the head of the line-up, and it more than lived up to its billing.
