LARGE parts of Cumbria were blanketed in snow as Met Office predictions came true.
Forecasters anticipated that up to 10cm of snow would fall on higher ground above 200m with many areas of the Lake District getting a covering yesterday in blizzard-like conditions.
A yellow warning was issued by the Met Office as they predicted that temperatures would plummet in south Cumbria due to severe weather conditions.
This remained in place until 23.55pm last night.
Motorists were this morning being urged to take care on the roads as forecasters predicted that ice would form on untreated surfaces due to the sudden drop in temperature.
A spokesman said: "Ice is expected to form on untreated surfaces tonight and last into Friday morning.
"In addition, some outbreaks of sleet and snow are likely to run quickly southwards on Friday morning, chiefly affecting parts of northern and eastern England, clearing the extreme southeast by late morning.
"This may give local accumulations of 1cm to 2cm and add to icy conditions in places."
