COUNCIL taxes could go up again to support the work of the county’s constabulary.

Cumbria’s police and crime commissioner, Peter McCall, is proposing to increase the policing precept by 1.91 per cent for 2017/18. His plans are going to public consultation, after which he will set a final budget by the end of February.

Mr McCall said: “I am proposing to increase council tax to cover the costs of inflation and budget pressures that have been evident from the constabulary overspending and the pressure on the budget in 2016/17."

Mr McCall’s budget proposal will go before the police and crime panel on January 23. Public opinion is also sought by February 13.
