FOR many people, grabbing a bargain in the post-Christmas and New Year sales is an annual ritual.
Though the scenes depicted are rather milder than some of the Black Friday madness we've become accustomed to seeing in recent years, The Mail's archive pictures show there has always been competition for the best items.
Though online shopping is now the go-to method for many, these pictures are a window into a time when the high street was the only option for bargain hunters.
Notable purchases include a double bed for just £20 and a £99 wedding dress.
Marks and Spencer in Dalton Road, Barrow, features, as do local independent stores Stollers and Dandy's - both still going strong into 2018.
