The feud between Jeremy Corbyn and Sir Richard Branson has deepened as the Labour leader's most senior ally called for the Virgin tycoon to be stripped of his knighthood.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell hit out at the entrepreneur, claiming he wanted to "undermine our democracy" after Virgin Trains released footage disputing Mr Corbyn's claims about overcrowding on one of its services.

Meanwhile, Mr Corbyn and his rival Owen Smith set out measures aimed at tackling the housing crisis in the UK as the leadership battle intensified.

Theresa May will gather her Cabinet ministers on Wednesday to discuss her plans for Brexit.

The Prime Minister has charged her top team with setting out the opportunities that leaving the European Union will create in each of their portfolios.

The Cabinet will meet at the Prime Minister's country retreat Chequers to discuss the next steps in the process amid speculation that Mrs May will implement Article 50 - triggering the two-year period leading to Brexit - without seeking the backing of Parliament.

EX-MINISTER CALLS FOR NEW TAX TO FUND NHS AND SOCIAL CARE SYSTEM

A new tax is urgently needed to fund the NHS and social care system, according to a Tory doctor and former health minister.

Dan Poulter said his experience working in hospitals had convinced him that a long-term plan was needed to ensure the health and social care system was properly funded.

He suggested that hiking national insurance could offer a simple way forward to put the health service and care system on a sustainable footing.

FAMILY 'IMMENSELY PROUD' OF MAN WHO TRIED TO SAVE STABBED BRITISH BACKPACKER

The family of a Briton injured in a stabbing attack in Australia have said they are "immensely proud" of him after he tried to save another backpacker.

Tom Jackson, 30, received critical injuries when he tried to help Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, as she was stabbed to death, allegedly by 29-year-old Frenchman Smail Ayad, police said.

His father Les Jackson issued a statement also praising the work of medical staff at Townsville Hospital in Queensland, where his son is being treated.

EDF BOSS VINCENT DE RIVAZ 'CONFIDENT' IN HINKLEY POINT PROJECT

The chief executive of energy giant EDF has reiterated the firm's commitment to building a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point despite the shock decision by the Government to review the multi-billion pound project.

Vincent de Rivaz said Hinkley Point C's technology is ready and its cost to consumers is fixed.

The firm's board has given the go ahead for the new £18 billion power station in Somerset but the Government caused a fresh delay by saying it wanted time to study the scheme.

BHS TO LEAVE THE HIGH STREET AS FINAL STORES ARE CLOSED

Department store BHS is expected to disappear from the high street today as its last stores close, ending 88 years of British retail history.

Administrators to the department store chain are set to shut 22 stores, the last of more than 150 branches nationwide.

Duff & Phelps and FRP Advisory have already overseen 141 closures over recent weeks, including BHS's flagship Oxford Street store in London's West End.

M20 TO REOPEN AFTER FOOTBRIDGE COLLAPSE

The M20 is expected to reopen on Sunday after a footbridge crashed on to the carriageways, sparking hours of traffic chaos on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The bridge came down between junctions three and four shortly after noon on Saturday when a digger being transported on the back of a lorry collided with it.

A motorcyclist in his 50s was taken to hospital in Tunbridge Wells with suspected broken ribs following the incident and the driver of the lorry was treated for shock at the scene.

FACE RECOGNITION POLICE TO SCAN NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL CCTV

Police officers with special skills for recognising the faces of offenders will be monitoring Notting Hill Carnival in a crackdown on crime.

The "super-recognisers" will be inside a CCTV control room seeking out both offenders committing crimes and anyone with bail conditions which ought to stop them from attending the event.

It is one of a number of measures the Met will be taking to ensure visitors from all over the country can stay safe and enjoy themselves during the carnival, which will be marking its 50th anniversary on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

LORD JANNER ABUSE CLAIMS SHOULD BE HEARD IN COURT FIRST - FAMILY

The family of Greville Janner wants the public inquiry into child abuse to delay its investigation into the late Labour peer.

Lord Janner, 87, who died in December, is alleged to have abused youngsters over a period spanning more than 30 years dating back to the 1950s, with offending said to have taken place at children's homes and hotels.

The allegations against him are due to be examined at hearings of the public inquiry next March.
