MOTORISTS were caught in tailbacks stretching for miles following a three-car crash on the M6.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the southbound carriageway between junction 40 for Penrith and junction 39 for Shap just before 1pm yesterday (Thursday).

Fire engines, police and the North West Ambulance Service attended the scene of the crash, which caused traffic to tail back as far as junction 41 for the B5305.

The crash happened as many families began their journeys for the start of the school summer holidays.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria police said that a Citroen C1, a Jaguar XE and a BMW 120D were all involved.

Lanes were closed temporarily while debris was removed and the vehicles were recovered.

She said that the driver of the BMW - a 54-year-old man - and a 34-year-old woman who was driving the Jaguar did not sustain any injuries.

However a 58-year-old man who was driving the Citroen and a 55-year-old female passenger were taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle with non-life threatening injuries.
