TWO CYCLISTS were taken to hospital after a collision with a car being driven by a motorist from Barrow near Broughton.

Police reported that one cyclist sustained serious head injuries after colliding with a blue Peugeot 207 being driven by a 44-year-old man from Barrow. The male cyclist was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance where his condition has been described as stable but critical.

The other cyclist collided with a wall and was treated at Furness General Hospital before being released. Both cyclists are aged 17 and from East Yorkshire. The driver of the Peugeot was uninjured.

The collision took place at the Smithy Road junction on the A595 at around 4.04pm yesterday.

Smithy Road was closed between Duddon Bridge and Ulpha for four hours. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police on 101.
