Wigs, wacky costumes and the wonderful world of cosplay descended on Carlisle as a growing convention attracted hundreds of fans.

Megancon returned for a second year to Morton Academy today and people from across the county enjoyed a day of gaming, fancy dress and meeting new friends.

It's now one of two installments of the event, which also takes place in August, and has become so popular there were fans queuing to get in.

After organiser Levi McGlinchy saw the success of last year's February event - the first time it had been held in the winter and at a new venue - he decided there was an appetite to host the convention twice a year.

Levi, who starts organising one convention after the last one ends, said: "It's a dedicated scene. People travel a long way. They travel to me but they will also travel to conventions in London and Glasgow.

"We have got a huge age range. I know what is bringing the kids in - it's all the Marvel movies that are huge - but what has kept the older ones coming back I don't know."

He said he there were many regulars who come back year on year.

"I know everyone now. It's quite bizarre. What is even weirder is that I don't know them when they're not here because they take their costumes off and I have no idea who they are," added Levi.

Cosplay fancy dress competitions, the world's nerdiest quiz and gaming tournaments, including Pokemon, Tekken and Bloodbowl, were among the highlights of the event.

More than 40 people pulled up a chair for a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament, which was set to last about six hours.

But with a chance to win a place in the European championships, determined players gave it their all.

This year there was also Mario Kart racing and pin the horn on the unicorn.

Stalls selling everything from manga, figurines, jewellery, games, clothes and film memorabilia were also part of the attraction.
