Cumbria Police confirmed that the man had died. Police said it is understood that the man died of natural causes after a medical episode.

On its Facebook page, Bay Search and Rescue posted: "It is with great sadness that we have to pass on the news that the driver of the car involved in the accident near our shop in Milnthorpe last week, where two of our team members where first on scene, has tragically passed away in hospital.

"The family made contact with us earlier today (Tuesday) and we accompanied them to the scene where they laid flowers.

"They have asked us to pass on their thanks to Milnthorpe and Arnside Fire crews, the NW Ambulance crews, The Air Ambulance crew and all those who continued to fight for him.

"He leaves a wife and two young children. The family are very much in our thoughts - we only wish we could have done more."
