THE M6 has reopened southbound following a serious accident in Cumbria.

Police were called today at 4.20am following reports of a crash on the M6 southbound between junction 39 and junction 37.

A white heavy goods vehicle, driven by a 53-year-old man from Beattock, left the southbound carriageway and travelled down an embankment where it collided with a bridge parapet.

The driver was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The M6 southbound was closed from junction 39 at Shap to allow collision investigation work to be undertaken, but now all lanes have re-opened.
