The last episode of The Great British Bake Off to air on the BBC has finished, and crowned a new champion, Candice Brown.

The PE teacher battled it out with garden designer Jane Beedle and Rolls-Royce aerospace engineer Andrew Smyth as they baked picnics fit for royals.

The finale marked the last time the show would air on the BBC before it moves to Channel 4 next year.

Judge Mary Berry and hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins will not move with the show, with co-judge Paul Hollywood the only member of the original team going to Channel 4.

Beedle, who was the first star baker of the seventh series, said it was "unreal" she had made it to the final, while Smyth, who was star baker twice in a row including in the semi-final, said: "Winning it seemed like a silly dream but now we are here I will damn well try."

Brown, who has held the title three times, revealed one of the side effects of getting so far in the competition, saying: "I would like to think I had got fit and toned from baking but I definitely haven't. I'm definitely struggling to fit in clothes currently."

Tasks for the final BBC episode, which had a royal theme, included a return to meringues for the signature bake, a technical challenge set by Mary Berry that will ask the contestants to complete a British classic after being given just one instruction and no measurements, and a showstopper which was the most complex set in the competition.

As usual, the winner was announced at a celebration attended by the family and friends of the three finalists, as well as the bakers they knocked out in previous rounds.
