THIS week, foodies all over the UK can rejoice as it is once again National Burger Day.

The fast-food classic has seen a resurgence in recent years with unique and eclectic flavours being offered up in restaurants alongside the humble beef burger.

As well as meat lovers being able to push their tastebuds to the limit with new and exciting flavours, many veggie options are now appearing on our menus in both restaurants and takeaways.

But, what's the best way to make a burger, where should we get our ingredients from, or for those of us who hate cooking, where can we go across the area to satisfy our appetite?

Where to buy them?

Dan Weston, director of the Ulverston Meat Company, believes simplicity is the key to making the perfect burger.

Speaking about why the dish is so popular, he said: "It's all about quality and convenience for people. All you need are good, quality ingredients"

The company makes a variety of burgers popular with families across south Cumbria, ranging from plain beef, to more exotic flavours like chorizo, smokey bacon and combinations like pork and apple.

There was no definitive advice on how best to cook patties made by the company, based in North Lonsdale industrial estate.

"It's all about individual taste, we don't put advice on our steaks so why do it with a burger?", Mr Weston added.

Key ingredients

If you feel like making your own patties, try sourcing ground beef or minced meat from NC Meats in Dalton Road, S Mason and Sons in Rawlinson Street or Irvings Butchers in Market Street Ulverston.

If eating burgers is more your thing, you could always take on the gluttonous 5,000-calorie challenge at the Custom House in Abbey Road, Barrow, which serves up a gut-busting edition complete with three six-inch patties, black pudding, onion rings and hash browns.

He thinks punters love the taste and convenience of their burgers.

He said: "It's a comfort food, it's a safe bet and they are difficult to mess up.

"We make all our own patties in-house and we offer to create your own burgers which is always popular.

"The weirdest option I saw was a jalapenos with black pudding and a fried egg on top, but I like mine simple with crispy bacon."

In conjunction with National Burger Day the restaurant is offering a special discount, selling six-ounce burgers for £3.95 instead of £7.95.
