CARNIVAL fever hit two neighbouring Furness villages with a great crowd supporting the event this weekend.

Masses of people turned out to see the colour and excitement of Askam and Ireleth Carnival on Saturday.

The parade, followed by the dancing competitions and entertainment on Duddon Sports and Social Club field, was drenched in sunshine.

This year's carnival queen was Teoni Grierson and the carnival princesses were Evie Fagan and Darcy Porter. The girls are all pupils at Askam Village School. After performing their regal duties Teoni and Evie were then also involved in the dancing competitions at the carnival.

Askam Village School and Ireleth St Peter's CE Primary School both supported the event and took part in the parade with their Olympic and Jungle Book themed costumes.

The dancing schools and troupes of Furness brought sparkle and colour to the event with their dazzling costumes and toe tapping routines.

Dance Fever's Ella McCarthy was excited to be performing with Dance Fever with the seven to nine-year-olds' Bake it Off routine.

Ella, seven, said: "I enjoy dancing and this is my fourth carnival year."

Gabrielle Garrick was performing Let's Rock 'n' Roll with Imperial School of Dance 14 to 17-year-olds.

The 15-year-old said:"I've been dancing for 11 years. Dancing is good because we are a team, you use your energy and it makes you feel good.

"We have a really good dance which is upbeat and happy and with lots of different spins in it. We love performing for the audiences."

Stuart Wallace, chairman of Askam and Ireleth Carnival, said: "It's been a fantastic day with great weather and people have really enjoyed it.

"The new layout of the field is certainly a huge improvement.

"The carnival fundraises for good causes, local groups and we support national and regional charities if there is a local connection."

The carnival committee thanked everyone who supported the event and helped with the setting up and running of the day.
