THERE is a timeless wonder about steam power; something which still captures the imagination, despite technology having moved on many moons ago.

Be it the mighty locomotives of yesteryear, or machines which fired industry, steam-powered engines rarely fail to impress.

Enthusiasts are preparing for all things steam-related at this year's annual Cumbria Steam Gathering which is held this weekend.

These days the event is about far more than the machines of days gone by.

Special attractions already booked for this year's show include the Broke FMX extreme moto cross display team, alongside traditional favourites the Sheep Show, the Pantonic All Stars Orchestra, the Morecambe Bay Archers and the all-action North West Lawn Mower Racing Association.

To whet the appetite of fans, we today take a trip into The Mail's rich archive of images.

If they prove one thing, it is that there is a passion for all things steam-related in south Cumbria.

We will be at this weekend's event with our photographers, so look out - you could be the next star of steam to make it into The Mail.
