Fire crews from Ulverston and Barrow were called to a cooking fire in Ireleth, minutes after they had contacted the resident to organise a smoke alarm check.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident where a cooking fire occurred at a home on Saves Lane, Ireleth, at around 12pm yesterday, February 14.

By coincidence, a member of the Fire and Rescue Service was on the phone to the owner of the property minutes before to organise routine smoke alarm tests when they heard the alarms going off in the background.

The resident reported that there was smoke and two fire engines from Ulverston and one engine from Barrow were immediately dispatched.

The fire was extinguished as the crews arrived, so fire fighters carried out an inspection of the property. There were no injuries or damage reported.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Fire and Rescue said: "It just shows you the value of smoke alarms.

Even if we hadn't happened to be calling them at the time, they heard the alarms and were given an early warning and we were, of course, able to respond very quickly."
