THE price of petrol has reached its highest level in over a year, new figures show.
Data published by the AA showed that a litre of petrol hit an average of £1.15 on Sunday.
This is the most expensive price since August last year.
In March, the average price was just £1.02.
Diesel has risen to £1.17 on Sunday, compared with just £1.01 in February.
AA president Edmund King said: "This is a hammer blow not only to family and business finances but a severe shock when people consider that supermarket fuel was available at £1 a litre earlier this year.
"Worse still, they look at oil and see it still within reach of 50 US dollars a barrel - harking back to spring 2009 when it last climbed back above 50 US dollars a barrel after a price crash but petrol remained below £1 a litre."
