A PARK in Cumbria was cordoned off after a woman was raped.

The incident happened between 3.50am and 4.30am this morning in St James’ Park in Denton Holme, Carlisle. The victim was a 19-year-old woman.

Police say she met a man in the city centre and they walked towards Denton Holme. Once they entered the park the man then raped her.

Police have issued an appeal for information.

The suspect is described as having dark hair, wearing jeans and grey top.

Police are calling on anyone matching who saw someone matching this description walking in Denton Holme or the surrounding area of St James' Park please contact them.

Enquiries are ongoing and a cordon was in place at St James’ Park for most of today. 

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area while investigations are carried out.
