The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Cumbria Police are investigating the death of a man at a Carlisle scrapyard.

The man was said to have been trapped underneath a forklift truck.

Police confirmed last night that the deceased man was from Skipton, Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to the incident yesterday morning.

It happened at the Michael Douglas salvage yard, Stainton Road, in the Etterby area of the city.

Officers, as well as fire crews and emergency medical personnel, were called to the scene at 11.25am. The fire crews were at the scene for about two hours.

Firefighters were called out to to free a man who had been trapped underneath a forklift truck.

He was airlifted with "life-threatening" injuries, said police, but later died.

Police officers were initially called out to reports of "concern for an individual".

The family of the deceased have been told.

Now, the HSE has confirmed the incident is being investigated with their workers supporting Cumbria Police, who are the lead authority.
