A CUMBRIAN supergroup who came together to help farmers in the wake of one of the county's deadliest storms have been recognised with a national award.

The Cumbria Farm Flood Action Group (CFFAG) was given the prestigious Farming Hero of the year award at a ceremony for the British Farming Awards in Droitwich Spa last night.

The group, which is made of a number of organisations including the Cumbria Agricultural Chaplaincy, the Westmorland Agricultural Society and Cumbria Commoners, was formed in December last year following Storm Desmond which wreaked havoc across the county.

Their support included financial assistance, assessing the damage, lobbying for the Farming Recovery Fund and mobilising tonnes of forage to be delivered to the worst hit areas in the wake of Storm Desmond, which left huge parts of Cumbria ravaged last December.

Georgina Lamb, is the regional officer for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I), one of the groups that spearheaded the campaign.

She said: “Storm Desmond and subsequent flooding led to dark times for many farmers, some of whom are still feeling the effects.

“CFFAG tried to make life a little easier for those hit by directing them to help available and assisting them in accessing support. By pooling all our resources and knowledge, the group was a one stop shop for many.”
