FELL racing, fell ponies, wrestling and an array of trade stalls brought in visitors from far and wide to this year's Coniston Country Fair.

More than 50 trade stands and an extra 20 stalls in the craft marquee helped keep the crowds entertained on Sunday.

Treasurer of Coniston Country Fair, Neil Salisbury, said: "This was a fitting tribute to Alan Wilson of Coniston Hall who passed away recently, and has been connected with the fair since it started over 40 years ago."

Set near the shores of Coniston Water, the traditional Lakeland show offers visitors an enthralling insight into traditional Cumbrian life.

Foxhounds, terriers, beagles and lurchers are common sights at the show, along with herdwick sheep and sheepdogs.

Traditional Cumbrian sports are one of the biggest attractions of the fair, with Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling and a fell race taking place from the show field to the top of the mighty Coniston Old Man and back.

Mr Salisbury said: "We had 59 runners in the Old Man race. It is a beautiful setting.

"It was a fantastic day. The crowds were huge, the weather was fantastic and there was a heck of a lot of things for people to do."
