A COUPLE are planning to launch a zero waste grocery store in Ulverston.

Husband and wife, Paul and Cat Moffatt, are behind a venture to open Cut The Wrap in the town centre.

The Moffatts, of Ulverston, want to introduce a store that will combat packaging and food waste by selling food produce loose from gravity dispensers. The products, which could include cereals, pasta, rice, lentils, nuts and dried fruit, would be sold by weight, so the customer buys the amount they require.

Shoppers will bring their own containers, or buy reusable containers in the shop, to take home their store cupboard essentials.

The business will also look at selling plant based milks, and also soaps and laundry products.

The Moffatts are looking for premises in Ulverston town centre and they are soon to launch a GoFundMe page to help start up the venture.

They hope they can be open for business in the coming months.

Mr Moffatt previously worked in a supermarket and he and his wife say they are frustrated by unnecessary excess packaging and waste involved with supermarket shopping. They believe customers are open to the idea of shopping differently and having zero waste, so they want to create their own store which will have as little environmental impact as possible.

The Moffatts, who are both 36, and have two young children, have been doing lots of research in the last year and have followed movements such as Plastic Free Cumbria and the nation's growing concern about waste.

The couple are delighted with the reaction to their Facebook Page in just the few days it has been active.

Mrs Moffatt, said: "We have been blown away by the fantastic response and interest so far.

"We want to open in Ulverston as soon as we can.

"We will launch a GoFundMe page very soon to help us get started.

"Cut The Wrap will be a package free, zero waste store.

"As far as we know, we believe this would be the first store like this in Cumbria."

The Moffatts are also keen to hear from the public about products they would like to see in the store.
