Batman has spoken out to reassure Cumbrian children that they have nothing to fear from clowns.

The caped crusader, courtesy of Cumbria Superheroes, had already been out and about in Whitehaven in a bid to help calm down concerned youngsters.

However, the man - who, like Batman, wants to keep his identity secret - has now recorded a 25 second video message for parents to show children elsewhere in the county.

Liam, from Cumbria Superheroes, had previously told the News & Star that the company had felt compelled to take action after hearing about youngsters suffering nightmares and unable to sleep as the 'creepy clown' craze sweeps the county.

The video had been viewed more than 10,000 times in the first 11 hours - and Cumbria Superheroes Facebook page has been inundated with 'thank you' messages from grateful parents.

Since their actions went viral, Batman has even received an invitation to appear on This Morning, but turned it down.

Liam said: "We're not in it for the publicity."

The craze has escalated in recent days, prompting Cumbria Police to again warn the public not to take part.

Incidents of children chased by clowns with weapons and reports of clowns using social media to target victims are among those being dealt with.
