AN 18-YEAR-OLD man from Barrow has admitted to stealing two coconut energy bars worth 78p from a supermarket while also having a lock knife in his possession.

Mr Lee Dacre, prosecuting, told the court how Damian Holowacz, of Ormsgill Lane, Barrow, entered Tesco Extra in Barrow on Thursday July 14 at 6pm and stole two coconut energy bars.

He also stole a bottle of Jack Daniels and sweets from ASDA before being stopped.

Police arrived to the store and confiscated a lock knife which was found in his possession.

In the interview he admitted that he had had drunk a considerable amount of vodka and had also been smoking cannabis prior to entering the supermarket.

Trystan Roberts, defending, said that the knife had not been used to threaten anyone and that it was merely in his possession.

He also added that his defendant had quite a few mental health issues.

Presiding magistrate, Mr Ian Skillen, handed Holowacz a 180-day sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered him to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

He was also made to pay court costs of £85.
