A SCIENTIST whose sparkling career ended at Cumbria's very own university will this evening be honoured for a lifetime of achievement in the educational sector.

Barrow-born Professor Peter Strike will receive the accolade at the CN Group Golden Apples Awards for 2016.

His life in the world of academia ended last year when, after five years in the position of vice-chancellor at Cumbria University, he hung up his cap and gown and retired.

Mr Strike will be among a number of heroes from the county's education, training and skills sectors to be recognised.

Among the finalists are a number from south Cumbria.

James Higgins, editor of the North-West Evening Mail in Barrow, said: "With the awards ceremony just hours away, anticipation has started to build. I know we are in for an inspirational night and am really looking forward to welcoming our fantastic finalists.

"Carlisle Racecourse has proven to be a fantastic venue in previous years and I'm sure its staff will deliver once again.

"As ever, these awards wouldn't be possible without our sponsors so I'd like to give them a final thank you for all they do."

Students and trainees will be honoured for their achievements as well as the leaders and unsung heroes who work tirelessly to inspire local learners of all ages.

The CN Group Education and Learning Awards are once again supported by associate partners Inspira and the University of Cumbria.

Other supporters include Lakes College, BAE, Burnetts, nucleargraduates, Furness College, Riverside and West Cumbria Works.
