MOTORISTS are being reminded that the A590 will be completely closed at Lindal between 8pm tonight and 6am tomorrow.

The road closure, which is being repeated tomorrow night, is to allow the final work to be carried out at the flood prevention project at the so-called Lindal Dip.

Highways England has spent £1.6m on the scheme, which has effectively levelled the gradient of the A590.

Since November, motorists have been hit by road closures, temporary traffic lights and reduced speed limits but now the end is finally in sight.

The road will be completely closed overnight on Friday March 24 and then, from 6am on Saturday March 25, the A590 will be completely open to traffic travelling in both directions for the first time in almost six months.

Buses will be diverted via Urswick and Stainton.

Highways England have said an official diversion will be in place, clearly signposted for motorists.

Drivers travelling to Barrow will be directed to the A5092 off the Greenodd roundabout to Grizebeck before taking the A595 south to Askam, where they can rejoin the A590.

The same route will be used for drivers travelling in the opposite direction.

During the work, the road has been moved, in parts, seven metres north west and raised by up to two metres. A 1.2-metre diameter drainage pipe has been installed underground to help store rainwater before slowly releasing it away.

Highways England bosses thanked local residents for their co-operation and understanding.
