An animal rescue in Barrow has praised the area's 'unique' vets for its treatment of local wildlife ahead of World Vet Day.

Bardsea Bird Sanctuary is a non-profit organisation that rescues sick and injured birds in South Cumbria.

After an influx of rescues due to bad weather and a spate of shootings in the area, the rescue has praised the practitioners in the Furness area ahead of World Vet Day on Saturday, April 27 to

Elisabeth Ashleigh, who runs the rescue, said: "We're very thankful that we're in an area with fantastic vets.

"In some areas, the vets can be quite quick to euthanise with it being wildlife, however our amazing independent vets, including Church Walk, Alexanders, Grove - they all deserve praise as well as Wild Side Vets which do a fantastic out-of-hours service"

In response to Elisabeth's posts on social media, a vet from Wild Side commented to say: "Any animal, no matter what species, deserves the best care and treatment we can give. All staff at WildSide understand this and live by this ethos.

"When we signed our veterinary oath, we promised to ensure the health and welfare of ALL animals entrusted to our care, and we are privileged to do so."
